ABB to deliver power infrastructure for Northvolt factory
ABB will deliver the power supply infrastructure from the local grid to the production facilities for Northvolt’s planned battery cell factory in Skellefteå, Sweden. This is not Northvolt’s first collaboration with the Swiss-Swedish group.
The power grid will be gradually brought into operation from 2021 when battery cell production in Skellefteå is to begin. ABB says it is responsible for project management, design, procurement of all third-party equipment, supervision of installation and commissioning. The scope of supply includes transformers, switchgear, cables and installation materials, protection equipment and control systems.
In the notification, ABB refers to the battery start-up Northvolt as a “strategically important customer and partner”. The design of the equipment for Skellefteå was developed jointly with Northvolt. “For us, it is important to support them in the work of building the world’s greenest lithium battery, and the construction of the battery factory in Skellefteå is a milestone in the quest for a society free of fossil fuels,” said Björn Jonsson, of ABB Northern Europe.
ABB had previously won several orders for power supply and automation at Northvolt Labs’ development and demonstration factory in Västerås.
Northvolt had recently upped their production targets, now aiming for capacities of around 150 GWh and a market share of 25% in Europe by 2030. “There is no doubt that our ambitions go far beyond 64 GWh,” CEO Peter Carlsson said.
