Zipcar launches electric van sharing in London

Zipcar’s new electric van sharing service took off in Brixton, where it is available for small businesses to join. The van sharing service, run through Zipcar for Business, uses a Renault Kangoo Maxi ZE.

So far, the one electric van will be stationed on Pulross Road in the South London district of Brixton (Borough of Lambeth) and available for businesses to book for short trips using the Zipcar app. The users will be responsible for charging the vehicle when needed at the charging point installed on Pulross Road.

The scheme will run for an initial 12-month trial period and is the result of a collaboration between Lambeth Council, Brixton BID, Zipcar for Business and Cross River Partnership’s Clean Air Villages Programme. Both the Lambeth Council and the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) fund the project.

Councillor Claire Holland, deputy leader of Lambeth Council and cabinet lead for the Environment and Clean Air, considers the Renault “London’s first electric van solely for the use of local businesses”.

Nine businesses have already signed up to the electric van sharing scheme.
