Tender: Barcelona looking to buy 29 electric buses
The public transport operator Transporte Metropolitans de Barcelona announced the tender of two contracts for a total of 29 electric buses. Specifically, this involves a quest for 23 articulated electric buses and another for six minibuses.
The electric buses are to be delivered between the end of 2020 and the beginning of 2021 and are part of a push for sustainable transport in Barcelona. The Catalan capital and its transit provider Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona aims to purchase 254 environmentally friendly buses.
The tender at hand is part of the second phase, and the procurement process of these buses consists of two bids. The first corresponds to 23 articulated electric buses for a value of 22 million euros. The second tender refers to a batch of electric minibuses that will serve the Barri Bus lines, for an amount of about 2 million euros. The vehicles will be manufactured during the year 2020 and will begin to run between the end of 2020 and the beginning of 2021.
This is only the beginning, though. The European Investment Bank (EIB) is making 73.5 million euros available to TMB. The loan will replace diesel buses and older natural gas models with newer, lower-emission alternatives. Specifically, 116 electric buses, 63 hybrid models and 75 vehicles with a modern natural gas engine will be covered. Besides, 20 diesel-powered double-decker buses will be replaced by vehicles with hybrid drive. The timetable has also been set: the first 105 buses are scheduled to go into regular service in 2019. In 2020, 75 coaches will follow, and in the following year, 74 vehicles will be added to the fleet.
The tender is open. Only TMB rolled out three articulated electric buses from Solaris and four units of the ie tram supplied by Irizar earlier this year and in 2018.
