Madrid claims clean air
Madrid’s new conservative city government attempted to roll back the driving bans in the inner city, causing a series of protests. The penalties for driving in the environmental zone with a combustion vehicle have now been reinstated, following a court decision on a lawsuit filed by environmental activists, including Greenpeace.
The move almost made Madrid the first European city to roll back environmental regulations, however, the courts struck down the temporary measure as there were no control measures to improve the air quality. Now city hall has three days to come up with a proper defense of their move, before the environmental zone is permanently reestablished.
