USA: new headquarters for BMZ in Virginia Beach
German battery systems manufacturer BMZ Group has opened the new headquarters of its American subsidiary BMZ USA in Virginia Beach. New assembly lines are also to be built at the site in order to further expand the company’s US business.
The new building offers a total of around 3,000 square meters of production, warehouse and office space. According to BMZ, it has continuously recruited new employees and installed assembly lines over the past two years to promote the production of battery systems in the USA. In total, more than two million dollars were invested in the production facilities and the conversion of the building. The move to the new premises is BMZ’s latest step in expanding its US business.
Growth is expected to continue over the next two years. “We will invest approximately $3 million in new equipment and fill our production area with additional automated assembly lines to both relocate existing lines from overseas to the US and produce some of the products currently under development here in Virginia Beach,” says Kai Schoeffler, Managing Director of BMZ USA. “Our engineering team will more than double. This will not only increase the number of employees but will also expand our know-how so that we can work on exciting new projects in all industries”.
Since 2017, 30 new jobs have been created at the Virginia Beach site, and an additional 20 employees are to be hired by the end of the year. BMZ markets and produces its lithium-ion batteries for North America from Virginia. According to the company, the batteries are used in power and garden tools, commercial vehicles, medical equipment, energy storage systems, household appliances and e-bikes.
Around 3000 people work for the BMZ Group worldwide. In addition to its headquarters in Germany, the company has production facilities in China, Poland and the USA as well as branches in Japan and France. Production in Germany could also potentially be added – together with StreetScooter and TerraE, BMZ has submitted an application for funding to the German government.
