Hurtigruten offers electric catamaran excursions
The Norwegian shipping company Hurtigruten is building the startup Brim Explorer, a battery-powered catamaran for polar water exploration. Starting in spring 2020, the ship will undertake various daily excursions under the Hurtigruten Svalbard brand.
Hurtigruten names Spitsbergen (May to October), Lofoten (spring/summer/autumn) and Tromsø (winter) as future areas of operation for the 24 x 11 metre catamaran called Brim.
The ship is capable of accommodating up to 140 passengers. Battery packs with a cumulative capacity of 800 kWh will guarantee a service life of ten hours at a speed of ten knots. The partners have not yet provided any further technical details.
The catamaran is currently under construction at Maritim Partners in Ålesund. The catamaran is expected to be launched in July and to fly the flag of Hurtigruten Svalbard in August. In addition, the parent company is already investing in a second ship of the same design, which is scheduled for completion in summer 2020. This is probably also not the end of the story either: the contract between Brim Explorer and Hurtigruten has a minimum term of five years.
