Fraunhofer Institutes & VDE establishing battery competence
Fraunhofer ISE, Fraunhofer EMI, and the Association of German Electrical Engineers VDE are establishing a new competence center for batteries and energy storage systems in Freiburg. Their focus is on market-oriented R&D, testing and certification.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE, the Fraunhofer Institute for High-Speed Dynamics, that is Ernst-Mach-Institute, EMI and VDE want to spend 30 million euros on their competence centre over the next three years. The opening is set in early 2019.
The new center in the town of Freiburg in south Germany, will offer applied R&D in battery cells and systems, the development of new testing standards, carrying out safety and performance tests as well as the certification of components and complete battery systems and also energy storage plants in the field. The focus lies on stationary storage systems for renewable energy, electric mobility as well as mobile applications.
