Alonso starting for Toyota in Le Mans
Fernando Alonso will not only be racing as a Formula 1 driver this year, but will also be starting in the endurance racing series WEC. He will be driving for Toyota in the hybrid class LMP1 and is set to race in almost all races for Toyota, including the season highlight in Le Mans.
Alonso has experience in long distance racing, as he previously competed in the Daytona 24-hour race last year, however he admits that “It will be a steep learning curve”, however he has stated that he is ready for the challenge and looking forward to competing. Furthermore, it looks like Toyota will be competing against itself as both Audi and Porsche have withdrawn from the LMP1 hybrid class race.
Meanwhile VW has announced their man in the seat of their fully electric racing car for the announced return to Pikes Peak: former Le Mans winner Romain Dumas. His history at the Colorado race track for the ‘Race to the Clouds’ is quite successful; he won three times. Hopes are set high and he is planning to attempt to set a new track record for electric cars.
