U.S. funds H2 technology: The U.S. Department of Energy announced another 13m dollars in funding for fuel cell and hydrogen technologies. The money will be spent on the development of a more powerful and less expensive fuel cell that uses less platinum, as well as the design, testing and development of advanced materials for energy storage in the form of hydrogen.

Recycling plan for Tesla batteries: Kemetco Research has commenced firsts tests of its recycling process for cathode materials. It especially focuses on the recycling of lithium-cobalt, which Tesla uses for its batteries. Kemote is of course eyeing the rising numbers of reservations for the Model 3 and resulting material requirements.

Higher energy density: An international research team has shown that energy storage capacities of lithium-rich cathode materials can be increased by using a CO2-based gas mixture to create oxygen vacancies at the material’s surface. This can, according to the scientists, increase the cathode material’s energy density by 30 to 30 percent.
