Germany funds fuel cell trains: Alstom has received 7.9 million euros in funding from German Ministry of Transportation for the development of railbound vehicles using fuel cell technology. First prototypes will go into service on a trial basis in 2016. Germany’s federal states of Baden-Württemberg, Hessen, Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia have already signed letters of intent for the use of the trains.

World’s biggest truck: The 360 ton GVW BelAZ 75710 mining truck recently began operating at a Siberian mine. It features four 1,200 kW electric traction motors developed by Siemens. Electricity is provided by two generators, each driven by a 16-cylinder diesel engine with an output of 1,700 kW.

Cable-free rail starts operating: Taiwan city of Kaohsiung is beginning test runs with light-rail tram cars from Spanish manufacturer CAF, that completely forgo overhead electrical lines and have supercapacitor energy storage units located at the top of the cabs. The system uses high-energy wireless charging technology that is housed at each station.

Alone on the road: Fraunhofer IPA presents its project Afkar, aimed at developing a robotic system to allow EVs to drive short distances on their own, i.e. to get to a charge point, find a parking spot or ‘meet’ a driver. The car might also know if a charging station is occupied or vacated.
