Hybrid racer from Holland: Team InMotion from the Eindhoven University of Technology is building a futuristic-looking hybrid racecar. Each wheel will be powered by its own electric motor, while a rotary engine will serve as range extender. Two years from now, the team hopes to break the lap record with its “IM01” at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, as well as compete at Le Mans in 2017 0r 2018.

LG Chem goes east: The battery manufacturer will build a new plant for electric car batteries in China, which set to open its doors at the end of next year. The factory will have an annual capacity of 100,000 units. This follows LG Chem’s latest purchase agreement with SAIC Motors and Qoros (we reported).

New battery on board: Maxwell Technologies says it is developing new ultracaps that could be used in mass transit applications, such as hybrid buses. The 2.85-volt, 3400-farad cells are said to have three times the shock and vibration tolerance as competing products.
